What is anonymity on Quora — and what is not?
Our mission on Quora is to share and expand the knowledge of the world. There are a few reasons why knowledge can sometimes only be shared anonymously, for example on controversial topics or when it puts someone’s life in danger. We believe it is important that there is a place where people can share knowledge of any kind in a safe and respectful environment.
We understand anonymity as a great responsibility and take many precautions — technical and operational — to protect your anonymity. In particular, Quora’s systems do not store information about the identity of the authors of anonymous questions and answers. We have installed several technical measures to ensure that this remains the case. Even with all these precautions, there is always a small risk that they will fail and that some identities could be revealed as part of a vulnerability.
Here we have compiled more information on how anonymity works on Quora:
Ⅰ.The basics: ask a question anonymously or write an answer anonymously
If you ask a question anonymously or write an answer, your name will not be associated with that content. You can ask a question anonymously by ticking the “Ask Anonymous” box while you are writing a question. You can write an answer anonymously by selecting the option “Write anonymously” in the “…” menu of the question that you want to answer anonymously.
Once you have published a content, you cannot anonymize it or remove the anonymity. For example, if you write a response under your name, you can’t anonymize it later — and vice versa. With the link to the anonymous editing page, you (or any person with this link) can make anonymous edits to the question or edit or delete the answer anonymously. All actions you perform on the publicly visible page (such as comment, positive ly, etc.) are done under your name, but you are not identified as the author of any anonymous content of any kind.
Ⅱ.Good to know: this is always associated with your name
Any actions you do not perform using the link to the anonymous editing page are publicly visible and associated with your name. These include the following functions:
- Positive ly
- Comment(including questions you asked anonymously or answers you wrote anonymously)
- Send response requests to someone or Quora
- Bringing questions together
- Propose changes
- Edit response wikis
- Undo edits recorded in the logbook
- Edit a question you didn’t ask (including the question, source, or topics)
In addition to these actions above, there are many actions on Quora that cannot be performed anonymously: follow topics or other users, share something on Facebook/Twitter, and send messages on Quora. So keep in mind that these functions are always performed under your name, even if you perform them from a page to a question or answer that you asked anonymously.A useful rule of thumb is that if an action was not performed using the anonymous editing link, then it is not anonymous.
Your written content & writing style: If you publish identifiable information with you as a person or maintain a consistent style – even if you are anonymous – you should be aware that others could identify you directly or programmatically.
